My Nova crew worked hard in 2015 and we are heading into 2016 with some newly promoted grey belts! Our team is growing and getting stronger every week, I'm excited to see where 2016 will take us!
Teaching kids BJJ classes is a funny thing because it can be the most exhausting part of my day but at the exact same time be the funnest, most satisfying, most enjoyable part. Last night I had a boy who could barely contain himself while we lined up tell me that he was going to have a new baby sister, I had a girl come to me before class to show me her wiggly tooth and then again in the middle of class holding the same tooth in her hand, I had a boy yell "This is so fuuun!!" while he was learning his very first mount escape, I had a 4 year old hit a backwards roll by herself for the first time during warm-ups. Sometimes when they roll they do advanced things without even knowing it (Did I really just see a 5 year old use a modified butterfly sweep that took me months to hit???!) Sometimes my kids learn technique so much faster than I do and it's fascinating to watch. All of these little moments are what make me love teaching and love BJJ so much more. Blessed to be where I'm at with Nova Gyms! #BuildingEmpires#OneDayAtATime #OneBrickAtATime

Strong females can be labeled as “bossy” or “catty” but are those true alpha female traits? I disagree. Not all women will be “Alpha” but you can develop the habits of an Alpha female. I practice Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to practice stepping up my “Alphaness.”
When she speaks, people listen, and she expects them to. She doesn’t ask for your attention, she commands it. She doesn’t have to shout, she doesn’t have to be the largest physical presence in the room. Men AND women, listen to her because she knows what she is talking about. She will never beg for attention or use immature antics to get people to notice her.
Other women are drawn to her. An alpha female always has a following of her close female friends, she doesn’t have trivial competition with other females because other females understand that she doesn’t waste time with petty disagreements. We’ve all known a female or two who claims that she doesn’t have many female friends because girls are “too hard to get along with.” That is non alpha female talk. Alpha females attract other females who she is more than willing to help, guide, encourage and support.
Chalene Johnson is an excellent example of an Alpha female who provides all of those things through her podcast “Build Your Tribe.”
She doesn’t have time for drama. She doesn’t have time for drama because she’s too busy building her empire. Whatever career path she chooses, she strives to do it well. Drama isn’t a part of an alpha female's life. You will never find a true alpha female wasting her day facebook stalking an ex, smack talking a rival or wallowing in self pity. Alpha females do not thrive on drama and do not waste time with people with do.
She isn’t intimidated. An alpha female doesn’t back down from a challenge, she isn’t afraid of hard work and sees things through to the end. Alpha females hold their ground, she won’t be backed into a corner without a fight. You can expect to the see a grand display of ferocity from an alpha female is forced to defend her stance, her family, her tribe or anything that she is passionate about. Kindness and compassion are second nature to and Alpha female but do NOT expect her to be a push-over in any sense of the word. It isn’t easy to provoke an Alpha female to wrath but when she is, she is a force to be reckoned with.
She is not controlled by her emotions. This doesn’t mean that all alpha females are emotionless robots who don’t care. This only means that she won’t let her personal feelings affect the decisions she has to make to keep her tribe, her business, her family or herself happy and healthy.
Do you agree that these are some of the traits of an Alpha female? Want to transform yourself into an “Alpha female? Boost your self- confidence and “Alpha Female” status by enrolling in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class. today.

Your teammates are your most valuable asset during your jiu-jitsu journey. They will provide you with the vital feedback you need to improve your game and reach the next level. Usually that feedback comes in the form of submissions. Do you keep getting caught in triangles? Your teammate is letting you know that you need to work on triangle defense!
Not only will you get the feedback you need but you will also get the support and encourage you need to keep showing up to class. You will form a tight bond with your training partners; don’t be surprised if these people end up being your closest group of friends. Don’t expect to go more than a week or two of not showing up to classes without getting a text, phone call, or facebook message asking where you are.
Jiu-jitsu can be a physically and mentally draining sport, having teammates to lean on and turn to for a word of encouragement in a time of frustration can be just the boost you’ll need to get past a challenging part of your jiu-jitsu journey.
Your teammates understand better than anyone else the frustrations that you will encounter because odds are, they’ve been themselves. Nobody understands a jiu-jitsu fighter better than another jiu-jitsu fighter!
